2022 Chevrolet Equinox

Pros: Generous passenger room for the class; large, versatile cargo space with good small-items storage; good selection of available comfort and safety features

Cons: Sole engine has only adequate power; some middling interior materials; so-so rearward visibility

CG Says: The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox gets revised front and rear fasciae, a new grille, and LED headlights/daytime running lights. The base L trim is dropped and a sporty-look RS trim is added; new-for-’22 features include wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capability, new interior trim on LS and LT models, available front and rear park assist, and a button to disable the automatic engine stop/start system. In Chevrolet’s SUV lineup, the Equinox slots between the subcompact Trailblazer and two-row midsize Blazer. The sole powertrain is a 170-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. All Equinoxes come standard with front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive is available on all trims. Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, following-distance indicator, and automatic high-beam headlights. Available safety features include blind-spot alert, rear cross traffic alert, and GM’s Teen Driver monitoring feature. A hands-free power liftgate, heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats are among the available comfort and convenience features. The Equinox provides pleasant road manners and excellent passenger and cargo room for its size, but its interior materials are only so-so, and its lone powerplant delivers mediocre off-the-line acceleration.
