2022 Acura MDX

Pros: Competitive pricing, standard advanced safety tech, nicely sorted ride/handling balance, addition of high-performance Type S variant

Cons: Cramped third-row seats best suited for children, True Touchpad interface is finicky, hybrid model is discontinued for 2022

CG Says: After skipping the 2021 model year, Acura’s three-row midsize crossover is redesigned on an all-new platform for 2022, gaining slightly larger dimensions, fresh styling inside and out, and new tech features—including Acura’s True Touchpad infotainment interface. The previous generation’s Sport Hybrid model is discontinued, but a performance-oriented Type S model powered by a 355-horsepower turbo 3.0-liter V6 is slated to debut later in the model year. The base MDX engine remains a 290-hp 3.5-liter V6, but it’s now paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission instead of the previous 9-speed. Standard features include a panoramic sunroof, removable second-row middle seat, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch infotainment screen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, wireless charging, and Amazon Alexa connectivity. The AcuraWatch suite of driver-assistance and safety technologies is also standard; it includes forward collision warning with automatic braking and pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, traffic-sign recognition, traffic-jam assist, and adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow. Available features include Acura’s CabinTalk in-cabin intercom system, leather upholstery, heated/cooled front seats, navigation system, and an ELS Studio premium audio system. The redesigned MDX strikes a nice balance between sport and luxury, with elegant appointments and nimble handling for a three-row SUV. Third-row seat space isn’t great, and the True Touchpad control interface requires a lot of practice, but the MDX remains one of the most compelling, well-rounded vehicles in its class.
