2019 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti Sport

Pros: Sporty character, crisp handling; cargo versatility; competitive pricing

Cons: Non-linear throttle response; complicated control layout; so-so passenger room; unproven reliability of Alfa Romeo brand

CG Says: The 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio adds rear-wheel models. Previously, only all-wheel-drive models were offered. Plus, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functionality is newly available. There is also a new limited-edition NRING model that adds unique trim to the Quadrifoglio. Introduced last year, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a premium compact crossover SUV that shares a platform with the Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan. Stelvio’s base powertrain is a 280-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and the Quadrifoglio model has a 505-hp turbo V6. Both engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Stelvio’s available safety features include adaptive forward collision warning and mitigation with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot alert, and rear cross-traffic alert. Other available features include a hands-free power liftgate, bi-xenon headlights, 360-degree camera, and adaptive cruise control. With its agile handling and quick steering, the Stelvio is one of the sportier premium compact SUVs on the market. The interior is nicely finished in upscale materials, and the cargo area is competitive with most premium compact SUV rivals. And even when extra-cost options are added, Stelvio pricing compares favorably to its primary competitors. The Alfa Romeo brand doesn’t have an established reputation for quality and reliability in the U.S., but the Stelvio’s distinctive Italian character and other assets should attract shoppers looking for a performance-focused luxury SUV that’s a bit off the beaten path.
