IT’S A BEST BUY BECAUSE:

The MDX delivers a sporty driving character, a high level of cabin refinement, and a fine selection of high-tech features, along with the expected passenger and cargo utility of a 7-passenger crossover SUV.

BUT…

The 3rd-row seating is a bit tight, and True Touchpad infotainment interface is tedious.

WORTH NOTING:

Like all new Acuras, the MDX does not offer traditional stand-alone options.

WHAT IS IT?

The MDX is Acura’s 7-passenger crossover SUV, and it’s been redesigned for 2022. Trim levels (which Acura handles like option packages) ascend through entry-level Base, volume Technology, sporty A-Spec, and top-line Advance. All of the above models are powered by a 290-hp 3.5-liter V6 paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Base and Technology are offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, while A-Spec and Advance are AWD only. A performance-oriented Type S model, with a 355-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, AWD, performance-tuned suspension, and unique trim, debuts as a mid-year addition to the line. A gas/electric Sport Hybrid version was part of the previous-generation MDX lineup, but it hasn’t returned for 2022. Base MDXs have a fairly high level of standard equipment, including heated front seats, power liftgate, panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and the AcuraWatch suite of safety features. Available features include Acura’s CabinTalk in-cabin intercom system, leather upholstery, heated/cooled front seats, navigation system, and an ELS Studio premium audio system.

WHAT’S NEW?

The redesigned MDX is built on an all-new platform that’s slightly larger than the previous-gen model, with fresh styling and new technology features—including a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and Acura’s True Touchpad infotainment interface (which uses a console-mounted touchpad instead of a touchscreen). The cabin ambiance has been upgraded with higher-end materials and trim. The 3.5-liter V6 is carried over, but it’s now mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission in place of the previous 9-speed.

FUEL ECONOMY

The EPA rates the MDX at 19 mpg city/26 highway with front drive and 19/25 with AWD; the Type S is rated at 17/21. In Consumer Guide® testing, an MDX Advance averaged 20.3 mpg in 60-percent highway driving. Acura recommends premium-grade gasoline.

VALUE IN CLASS

The MDX drives and handles exceptionally well and boasts a quiet, refined cabin. Third-row seat room and comfort are not exceptional, and the finicky True Touchpad control interface requires lots of acclimation. Still, this Acura deserves a top spot on your shopping list for its spacious cabin, nicely balanced driving manners, competitive prices, and upscale feel inside and out.
