IT’S A BEST BUY BECAUSE:

The Mustang Mach-E invigorates the mainstream electric-vehicle segment by offering dramatic styling and surprising performance in addition to its everyday practicality and competitive driving range.

BUT…

The swoopy body styling intrudes a bit on maximum cargo volume and rear-seat passenger space.

WORTH NOTING:

Since it doesn’t have an internal-combustion engine, The Mach-E has a drainable front trunk (or “frunk”) under its hood, with 4.8 cubic feet of cargo space.

WHAT IS IT?

The Mustang Mach-E is a pure-electric 5-passenger crossover SUV that boldly appropriates the name and styling cues of Ford’s beloved Mustang sporty car. It’s Ford’s first regular-production vehicle that’s been designed from the ground up as an EV. The Mach-E offers a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive and two battery-pack sizes—a 70kWh battery, or an extra-cost 91kWh battery that enables an extended driving range. Trim levels ascend through entry-level Select, California Route 1, Premium, and high-performance GT trim levels (the GT comes only with AWD). Horsepower ratings are 266 hp on Select models, 290 hp on extended-range battery models, 346 hp on AWD extended-range models, and 480 hp on the GT. The GT also receives sport-tuned suspension, sport front seats, 20-inch wheels on wider tires, and an available adaptive damping suspension.

Standard equipment includes a digital instrument panel, 15.5-inch vertically oriented touchscreen with navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, DC fast-charging capability, and the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of active safety technology features. Available features include a panoramic fixed sunroof, hands-free liftgate, 360-degree surround-view monitor, automated parking system, and Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving technology.

WHAT’S NEW?

After the Mach-E’s debut for 2021, its battery capacity has been increased from 68.0 to 70.0 kWh on the standard battery pack, and from 88.0 to 91.0 kWh on the extended-range pack. Though updated EPA numbers aren’t available, this upgrade should increase the Mach-E’s real-world driving range at least slightly over the previous ratings, which ranged from 211 miles on the AWD standard-range model to 305 miles for the rear-drive California Route 1 model (which is now available with all-wheel drive; it was previously RWD only). Among other minor updates is an Ice White Edition Appearance Package that adds Star White Metallic Tri-Coat paint and unique white interior and exterior trim elements.

FUEL ECONOMY

EPA ratings for the Mustang Mach-E vary from 96 MPGe city/84 highway/90 combined on AWD extended-range models to 108 MPGe city/94 highway/101 combined on the California Route 1 model.

VALUE IN CLASS

The Mustang Mach-E is an ambitious, audacious vehicle that endeavors to deliver the passenger and cargo versatility of a crossover SUV, a sporty driving character and heritage styling that are worthy of the Mustang name, innovative cabin design and technology features, and the driving range and charging convenience of a cutting-edge electric vehicle. We think it meets all those goals.
