IT’S A BEST BUY BECAUSE:

The G70 offers an impeccably finished cabin, an athletic driving experience, distinctive styling, and generous list of features, all at prices that handily undercut most European rivals.

BUT…

The rear seat is cramped, front-door apertures are stingy, and fuel economy isn’t great.

WORTH NOTING:

An optioned-up, limited-production G70 3.3T Launch Edition model includes lightweight 19-inch wheels, matte-finish paint, and an exclusive red leather interior.

WHAT IS IT?

The G70 is a compact sport sedan from Genesis, the luxury division of South Korean automaker Hyundai. The G70 debuted for the 2019 model year and offers a choice of two turbocharged engines: 2.0T models have a 252-hp 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, and 3.3T models get a 365-hp 3.3-liter V6. Both powerplants are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and are available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Base 4-cylinder G70s come well equipped with features such as a navigation system, hands-free trunk opener, keyless entry and starting, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity. Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Leather upholstery, a wireless charging pad, and a 15-speaker premium audio system are among the available features. On 3.3T models, the available features also include heated/ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, head-up display, 360-degree surround-view monitor, and a limited-slip/torque-vectoring differential.

WHAT’S NEW?

The 2022 G70 loses the previously available 6-speed manual transmission for its 4-cylinder engine, but gets a significant refresh that includes bolder front and rear styling, updated interior materials, a new digital gauge panel, and a new (and improved) infotainment system with a 10.25-inch touchscreen in place of the previous 8-inch screen. There’s also an available variable exhaust-valve system, a new Sport Plus drive-mode setting, and a Highway Driving Assist lane-centering feature for the adaptive cruise control system.

FUEL ECONOMY

The 4-cylinder G70 is EPA-rated at 21 mpg city/31 highway with rear-wheel drive and 20/28 with all-wheel drive. The V6 G70 is rated at 18/27 with RWD and 17/25 with AWD. During Consumer Guide® evaluation, an AWD 3.3T averaged 20.3 mpg in a test that consisted of 55-percent highway driving. Premium fuel is recommended on all.

VALUE IN CLASS

The improved-for-2022 Genesis G70 is an impressive vehicle even before you factor in its outstanding value for the dollar and generous 10-year warranty. Like most cars in its class, the G70’s rear seat is cramped, and the front seats might be a bit too cozy for big-and-tall folks. Still, the G70 deftly blends luxury and sport like the best European sport sedans, and offers a comprehensive list of safety equipment and technology features.
