IT’S A BEST BUY BECAUSE:

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 offers respectable driving range, nicely balanced driving dynamics, DC fast-charging capability, and ambitious styling inside and out.

BUT…

It isn’t available in all 50 states just yet, the turning circle is rather wide for the vehicle’s size, and rear visibility isn’t great—due in part to the lack of a rear window wiper.

WORTH NOTING:

The Ioniq 5 inaugurates a new all-electric-vehicle sub brand from Hyundai. Other Ioniq EVs—including the Ioniq 7 three-row SUV and Ioniq 6 compact sedan—are scheduled to debut in the near future.

WHAT IS IT?

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an all-new pure-electric 5-passenger compact crossover SUV that’s the first of a planning line of pure-electric Hyundais. The Ioniq 5 offers a choice of a 58-kWh battery pack or a 77.4-kWh battery pack. The smaller pack comes solely with rear-wheel drive and a single electric motor with 168 horsepower, and delivers an EPA-estimated driving range of 220 miles. The larger battery pack is offered with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive; RWD models have 225 hp and an estimated driving range of 303 miles, and AWD models have dual electric motors for a total output of 320 hp and an estimated driving range of 256 miles. The small battery pack comes only in SE trim; the larger battery pack is offered in SE, SEL, and Limited trim levels, each with a choice of RWD or AWD.

Standard equipment includes a digital instrument panel, 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, heated front seats, keyless entry and push-button starting, 350-kW DC fast-charging capability, and a comprehensive suite of safety features. Available equipment includes a hands-free power liftgate, panoramic sunroof, advanced adaptive cruise-control system, 360-degree surround-view monitor, and a head-up display. The Limited models’ “Vehicle to Load” (V2L) two-way on-board charger can supply up to 3.6 kWh of power to charge or power other electric devices, appliances, and vehicles.

WHAT’S NEW?

The Ioniq 5 is an all-new vehicle for 2022.

FUEL ECONOMY

The standard-range Ioniq 5, which comes only with rear-wheel drive, is EPA-rated at 127 MPGe city/94 highway/110 combined. With the long-range battery pack, the ratings are 132 MPGe city/98 highway/114 combined with rear-wheel drive and 110 MPGe city/87 highway/98 combined with all-wheel drive.

VALUE IN CLASS

Despite its avant-garde looks and control layout, the Ioniq 5 is a practical everyday commuter vehicle that’s also engaging to drive. Its driving range is not game-changing, but the standard DC fast-charging capability promises quick charging times when connected to a Level 3 charger. In all, it’s an exceptionally well-rounded EV.
