2018 BMW X6

Pros: One-of-a-kind looks; handling is agile for a relatively large, hefty SUV; strong, smooth powertrains; comfortable, supportive seats; classy cabin trimmings

Cons: Sloped “fastback” body style compromises cargo utility and rear-seat passenger headroom; poor rear visibility; large wheels and performance-oriented suspensions make for a stiff ride; pricier than more-practical X5 sibling

CG Says: The 2018 BMW X6 is essentially unchanged. The X6 is a sloped-roof “fastback” variant of BMW’s midsize X5 SUV. Other than their rooflines and a few small features, the X5 and X6 are virtually identical, though the X6 does not offer a diesel or plug-in-hybrid model like the X5 does. The X6 model lineup ascends through six-cylinder sDrive35i and xDrive35i models, the V8-powered xDrive50i, and the line-topping high-performance X6 M. All engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The base sDrive 35i is rear-wheel drive and all other X6s have standard all-wheel drive. Any X6 remains a vehicle for shoppers who value style over utility… which seems a bit peculiar when discussing a sport UTILITY vehicle. If a rakish silhouette is more important to you in your SUV than cargo room or rear-seat passenger space—so much so that you’re willing to pay extra for a swoopy roofline and diminished capacity—then the X6 is for you. But for less money, the X5 delivers all the performance of the X6, with none of its drawbacks.
