2021 Hyundai Kona

Pros: Powerful turbocharged engine is available; spacious interior for a subcompact SUV; lengthy list of available features

Cons: Hard plastic prevalent in the interior; steering response is uneven

CG Says: The 2021 Hyundai Kona adds a new Night Edition appearance package, but is otherwise unchanged. The subcompact-crossover Kona slots below the Hyundai Tucson in both size and price. Two gas powertrains are offered: SE and SEL models have 147-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, while Limited and Ultimate models get a 175-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder mated to a 7-speed automated-manual transmission. The turbo 1.6 is one of the most powerful engines in the class. All gas-powered Konas offer a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The Kona Electric has a 201-hp electric motor with an estimated range of 258 miles and is only available in California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The Kona Electric is front-wheel drive only. Available features include blind-spot alert, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, wireless cell-phone charging, and head-up instrument display. The Kona offers a comprehensive list of standard and available features—many of which are unusual for the class. It offers generous passenger and cargo room for its size, as well as pleasant driving manners. The Kona is one of the strongest entries in its class, and a must see for subcompact-SUV shoppers.
