2022 Hyundai Tucson

Pros: Pros: Cargo capacity is among the largest in the compact SUV class; hybrid version boasts smooth powertrain and notably better fuel economy; long list of safety, tech, and comfort features

Cons: The 2.5-liter engine’s transmission can be reluctant to downshift; touch-sensitive “virtual” control buttons can be tricky to use

CG Says: Hyundai’s compact SUV is redesigned for 2022, gaining distinctive new styling, more passenger/cargo room, a new standard engine, and its first gas-electric hybrid powertrains. The conventional gas powertrain mates a 187-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission; power is similar to the previous-generation Tucson’s optional 2.4-liter engine, but fuel economy has increased by 3-4 mpg.  The gas engine is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive in base SEL, sport-styled N-Line, or top-line Limited models. The Tucson Hybrid comes in Blue, SEL Convenience, and Limited trim levels, all of which are powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor for a combined 226 horsepower; a 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. The plug-in-hybrid Tucson comes in SEL or Limited trim; it shares the Tucson Hybrid’s  basic powertrain, but has a larger battery pack and a more powerful electric motor that raise output to a combined 261 horsepower and deliver an estimated electric-only driving range of 32 miles.

Standard safety features on all Tucson models include forward collision avoidance assist, high beam assist, lane-keep assist, driver-attention monitor, and intelligent speed-limit assist. Available safety features include safe-exit warning, blind-spot collision avoidance, and blind-spot view monitors. Also available is an ultrasonic rear occupant alert system that can detect and alert the driver to movement in the rear seat after the driver has exited the vehicle. Available comfort and convenience features include a hands-free power liftgate, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, and wireless device charging. Available tech features include wireless Apple Car Play/Android Auto connectivity and Hyundai Digital Key (a smartphone app that allows you to lock or unlock the doors and drive the vehicle without carrying the physical key fob). The Tucson’s redesign for 2022 strengthens its well-rounded nature while giving it a provocative new look. The increased passenger/cargo room and the polished, economical hybrid powertrains are key assets that help the Tucson remain a compelling mainstream entry in the highly-competitive compact SUV class.
