2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG SLC 43

Pros: Invigorating acceleration, particularly with top-line SLC 43 model; crisp handling; higher-class build quality, materials, and comfort than most two-seat sports-car contenders

Cons: High base prices escalate quickly with options; ride can become stiff over sharp bumps

CG Says: The 2019 Mercedes-Benz SLC-Class topline AMG SLC 43 model gains 23 horsepower. Otherwise, the SLC is little changed. The SLC is a premium sporty/performance two-passenger convertible with a retractable hardtop that was formerly known as SLK, until the name changed to SLC for 2017. Mercedes also builds a larger and more expensive SL-Class roadster. The engine of the base SLC 300 is a 241-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The performance AMG SLC 43 is powered by a 385-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. Both engines are paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. Available features include blind-spot alert, adaptive cruise control, steering-linked LED headlights, neck-level heating system, and park assist. The SLC is sporty and engaging to drive, but it still delivers the quality and refinement expected of Mercedes. Prices are out of reach for most, a condition exacerbated when options are added. Current Porsche Boxster owners might not give this car a second glance, but anyone considering the Audi TT should give the SLC a spin.
