2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Pros: Off-road ability; “bling” factor; luxurious interior

Cons: Fuel economy; steep pricing; wind noise at highway speeds

CG Says: The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class has only minor changes this year. Last year, for the first time since its introduction in 1979, Mercedes-Benz’s boxy, old-school off-road vehicle was completely redesigned. At a glance, the current Mercedes-Benz G-Class looks nearly identical to its predecessors, but it’s notably more modern and more spacious inside—there’s 1.5 inches more front legroom and 5.9 inches more rear legroom. Truck-type body-on-frame construction is retained, although the solid front axle has been replaced by independent front suspension for a better on-road ride while maintaining the G-Class’s characteristic off-road prowess. A turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 develops 416 horsepower in the base G 550 or 577 hp in the high-performance AMG 63. Both versions are paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive with a 2-speed transfer case and three differential locks is standard. Available safety features include autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot alert, lane-keep assist, drowsiness alert, and adaptive cruise control. The G-Class’s rugged persona is prime selling point, although few of its well-heeled owners are likely to take a G-Class off road. The new G-Class has better on-road comfort than it did before, but other premium SUVs still have superior on-road behavior and better fuel economy.
