CG Says: The 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK gets a more powerful base engine. A turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 241 horsepower replaces the previous 201-horsepower turbo four. Reflecting the increase in power, the base SLK250 is now badged SLK300. The new engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic, which replaces a 7-speed auto. A manual transmission is no longer available. All other SLKs have a 7-speed automatic. The SLK is sporty and engaging to drive, but it still delivers the quality and refinement expected of Mercedes. The V6-powered SLK350 delivers great performance, but the price is out of reach for most, a condition exacerbated when options are added. Current Porsche Boxster owners might not give this car a second glance, but anyone considering the Audi TT or BMW Z4 should give the SLK a spin.
