2022 Nissan Pathfinder

Pros: Comfortable ride; smooth shifting 9-speed automatic transmission; good selection of comfort and technology features

Cons: Third-row seat is cramped for adults; gear selector takes getting used to

CG Says: After skipping the 2021 model year, the Nissan Pathfinder is redesigned for 2022 with edgier styling, a more contemporary interior design, and a host of newly available features. Like the previous-generation Pathfinder, this new version is a midsize crossover SUV with three-row seating.

The sole engine choice is a carryover 284-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, but it’s now paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission instead of the previous CVT automatic.

The Pathfinder is offered in four trim levels: S, SV, SL, and Platinum, all of which are available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Maximum seating capacity is eight people, or seven with the available second-row captain’s chairs.

All versions of the 2022 Pathfinder have extensive high-tech safety features, including automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning.

The Pathfinder is also available with an upgraded version of Nissan’s ProPILOT Assist feature, a driver-assist system that pairs adaptive-cruise-control functionality with automatic lane-centering steering assist (the driver’s hands must remain on the steering wheel). ProPILOT Assist can also be optioned with a Navi-Link feature that uses navigation-system data to “predict” upcoming roads and slow the vehicle accordingly for curves and freeway exits.

Other newly available features include semi-aniline leather upholstery, head-up instrument display, digital gauge cluster, and a wireless charging pad. The previous-gen Pathfinder was solid and competent, but it was one of the oldest designs in its class, and felt a bit dated as a result.

The 2022 redesign sharpens the overall appeal of this generally sound midsize crossover, making the Pathfinder a decent choice for buyers seeking to blend practicality with a dash of rugged verve.
