2016 Scion iM

Pros: Competitive pricing; generous selection of standard features; versatile hatchback body configuration

Cons: Driving character isn’t as peppy or agile as sporty looks suggest; some middling interior materials

CG Says: Scion adds a new compact-sized 4-door hatchback to its lineup for 2016. The Scion iM is essentially a hatchback version of the Toyota Corolla that’s sold overseas as the Auris; as such, the iM can be considered a spiritual successor to the departed Toyota Matrix hatchback. As with other Scion products, the iM adheres to a one-trim-level/no-options policy, with the only choices being manual or automatic transmission and paint color. However, the iM comes with a fairly heavy load of standard equipment, and there are dealer-installed dress-up items and a navigation system available. Among the iM’s standard features are automatic climate control, cruise control, auto on/off headlights, heated power-folding mirrors, remote keyless entry, rearview camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, a 4.2-inch multi-information display in the instrument cluster, a 7-inch dashboard touchscreen, Bluetooth audio and phone, voice recognition, text-message feature, Aha app, and an audio system with automatic sound leveling (based on vehicle speed). The Scion iM’s sporty, aggressive styling belies its lackluster acceleration and so-so driving character; a Mazda 3 or Ford Focus are much better choices for fun behind the wheel. However, the iM’s formidable list of standard features, aggressive pricing, and spunky styling inside and out make it a compelling compact-car choice.
