2019 Tesla Model X

Pros: Robust acceleration; low per-mile operating costs; striking styling; better passenger and cargo room than a Model S

Cons: Steep pricing; limited availability; unknown long-term reliability; complex falcon-wing doors preclude roof-rack storage; sun glare through panoramic windshield

CG Says: The 2019 Tesla Model X has a simplified model lineup and longer driving range. Only Long Range and Performance versions are offered and the maximum estimated driving range is now 325 miles. Last year, 295 was the max. Introduced in 2016, the Model X is a pure-electric premium midsize crossover SUV based on Tesla’s Model S sedan. All Model Xs come standard with all-wheel drive (a second electric motor powers the front wheels) and seat five to seven, depending on second-row configuration and if the optional third-row is ordered. Motorized “falcon-wing” top-hinged rear doors are perhaps the Model X’s most eye-opening feature; they utilize a complex hinging system that enables them to open fully in tight quarters. The gullwing-like doors allow easier access to both second- and third-row seats. Also easing entry to the third-row seat are motorized second-row seats that move forward when needed. Another unusual Model X feature is a panoramic windshield that curves into the roof. Available features include front doors that open on approach and adjustable air suspension. Full Self-Driving Capability is an option that Tesla claims, “…able to conduct short and long trips with no action required by the person in the driver’s seat.” However, there is a disclaimer about the legality of the system. Two versions of the Model X are offered. The base Long Range has an estimated driving range of 325 miles and Tesla says it accelerates 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The top-line Performance has a top speed of 163 mph and can do the 0-60 sprint in 2.7 seconds. Performance has a estimated range of 305 miles. Those who like the performance and green technology of the Tesla Model S sedan can now have those attributes along with the extra passenger and cargo room of an SUV.
