2014 Volkswagen Eos

Pros: Nicely designed retractable hardtop has integrated power sunroof; ride is nicely balanced between zippy handling and comfort; reasonably affordable for a classy-feeling convertible

Cons: Cramped rear seat; limited trunk space, especially when the retractable hardtop is down; minor body quivering in top-down driving

CG Says: The 2014 Volkswagen Eos gains a few minor trim-level equipment revisions this year, as well as the availability of Volkswagen’s Car-Net communications system/smartphone app. Though not the most exciting convertible around, the Eos does offer open-air fun and steel-top security in an affordable, practical package. A pleasant ride, fine handling, and a classy interior add to its appeal. The main downsides are a tight back seat, limited trunk space, and possible long-term durability issues with the complex top. Still, we prefer the Eos over its only real rival, the Volvo C70, which has comparable performance but costs several thousand dollars more.
