CG Says: The 2021 Buick Encore GX adds standard wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functionality and satellite radio. Buick introduced a new subcompact crossover SUV for 2020. The Encore GX slots in above the original Buick Encore, which launched as a 2013 model and remains the entry-level model in Buick’s SUV lineup—at least for now. Although its shares its first name with the existing Encore, the Encore GX is a completely different vehicle; it shares its basic platform with the new Chevrolet Trailblazer, which launched as a 2021 model. The Encore GX is 3 inches longer overall than the Encore, and more than a foot shorter than Buick’s Envision compact SUV. The GX offers a choice of two 3-cylinder engines. A 137-horsepower turbocharged 1.2-liter is the base powerplant and is only available with front-wheel drive. A more powerful 155-hp 1.3-liter turbo is optional on FWD models and standard on all-wheel-drive GXs. FWD models have a continuously-variable automatic transmission (CVT) with either engine, while AWD models come with a 9-speed automatic. Forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, following distance indicator, and automatic high-beam headlights are standard. Other available safety features include rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot alert, rearview camera mirror, adaptive cruise control, and surround-view camera. The Encore GX costs a bit more than its Encore sibling, but for most shoppers it’s money well spent; the GX offers important safety features not available on the original Encore, plus more cargo room behind the back seat and a more up-to-date design.
