Pros: Fine ride and handling balance; good projected fuel economy for the class; value pricing
Cons: Odd “toggle” shifter; rear-seat room is a bit limited; so-so rear visibility
CG Says: Cadillac makes a belated entry to the flourishing premium compact crossover field with the introduction of the XT4 for 2019. The XT4 is a bob-tailed, 5-passenger compact SUV that competes with vehicles such as the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Audi Q5, with starting prices that undercut those rivals. Power is provided by a new 237-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available on all models. Available safety features include forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, front and reverse automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, and rear camera mirror. Other available features include massaging front seats, park assist, power tilt/telescopic steering wheel, and Cadillac’s Active Sport Suspension with Continuous Damping Control. It may have taken Cadillac a while to field an entrant in the premium compact SUV category, but the XT4 is a worthy contender that offers a sporty driving character, a lengthy list of desirable safety and technology features, and distinctive upscale ambiance inside and out, all at highly competitive prices.
