CG Says: After its redesign last year, the 2016 Ford Edge gains some new features. Ford’s unpopular MyFord Touch media control system is replaced by an available new SYNC 3 interface. The base 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine now has automatic start/stop on front-wheel drive versions. Variable-ratio power steering is available. All models now have standard keyless access and starting and a hands-free liftgate is newly standard on Sport. Trim levels ascend through SE, SEL, Titanium, and performance-oriented Sport models. The base engine is a 2.0-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder with “twin scroll” turbocharger rated at 245 horsepower. Optional is a 3.5-liter V6, rated at 280 horsepower. Sport has a standard 315-hp, 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6. All are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is optional across the board; except Sport where it is now standard. Technology features include lane-keep assist, active park assist, and a hands-free opening liftgate which opens with a swipe of a foot under the rear bumper. The previous-generation Edge was beginning to feel a bit long in the tooth, but this welcome redesign brings it fully up to date. Though the “traditional” 5-passenger crossover SUV has been somewhat marginalized by three-row midsize SUVs and a new wave of upsized compact SUVs, the new Ford Edge offers plenty of “just right” appeal.
