Pros: Surprisingly powerful EcoBoost V6 engines, broad array of body/trim configurations, good selection of technology features, excellent fuel economy for the class
Cons: Higher repair costs of aluminum body, so-so control layout, ride quality not quite best in class, some visibility issues
CG Says: The Ford F-150 gets a mid-cycle refresh for 2018 with revised styling, newly available features, new engines, and increased availability of the 10-speed automatic transmission. Pedestrian detection, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and WiFi hotspot are newly available. The base 3.5-liter V6 engine has been replaced by a new 3.3-liter V6 that is rated at the same 282-horsepower as the previous 3.5-liter. The turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost has been redesigned, but its 325-hp rating is also unchanged. The 5.0-liter V8 is revised and horsepower increases from 285 to 295. The turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 is unchanged. It develops 375 hp in all models, except the off-road/performance-oriented Raptor where it puts out 450 hp. A 3.0-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V6 is expected later in the model year. All engines (except the base 3.3-liter V6 which has a 6-speed automatic) are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. All F-150s have fuel-saving stop/start technology. The F-150 offers regular-, extended-, and crew-cab body configurations among XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited trim levels. The lightweight aluminum body structure, high-tech available features, and impressive powertrain lineup help the F-150 feel like a truly cutting-edge pickup inside and out.
