Pros: Excellent road manners for such a large vehicle, satisfying acceleration, cavernous cabin space for passengers and cargo, 9200-lb towing capacity
Cons: Fuel economy, poor maneuverability in tight quarters
CG Says: Ford’s full-size SUV gets a substantial refresh for 2022, with updated styling and a pair of new models that aim to sharpen the Expedition’s appeal for performance and off-roading enthusiasts. The Expedition is available in Regular- and “MAX” extended-length models. XL, STX, and XLT models are powered by a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 rated at 380 horsepower; Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum versions have a 400 hp version of this engine. All Expeditions have a 10-speed automatic transmission.
New for 2022 is the off-road-oriented Timberline Edition, with raised ride height, all-terrain tires, protective underbody cladding, two-speed transfer case, and special trim accents, along with a 440-hp twin-turbocharged version of the 3.5-liter V6. Also new for 2022 is the Stealth Edition, featuring sport-tuned suspension, blackout trim elements, 22-inch black aluminum wheels, red brake calipers, and the same 440-hp V6 as the Timberline.
The Expedition can seat up to eight passengers, with second-row seats that tilt and slide forward for easier access to the third row. Available features include a dual-headrest rear-seat entertainment system, panoramic sunroof, hands-free foot-activated liftgate, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, active park assist, wireless device charging, Wi-Fi hotspot, and remote start. Newly available for 2022 are a 12.4-inch digital gauge cluster, a 15.5-inch portrait-style infotainment touchscreen (shared with the Mustang Mach-E), Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free highway driving assist feature, and Ford Power-Up over-the-air software updates.
Although no full-size SUV is inexpensive or frugal, the Expedition is among the best in the class, with its all-around refinement, expansive cabin space, and impressive hauling and towing capabilities. The 2022 refresh sharpens the Expedition’s appeal even more, making it well worth considering for buyers seeking a true three-row, body-on-frame SUV.
