Pros: Competitive pricing; good passenger room for a compact; nicely finished interior
Cons: Engine noise under hard acceleration; real-world fuel economy doesn’t match EPA numbers
CG Says: The Kia Forte is redesigned for 2019 on a slightly larger platform, gaining fresh-but-familiar styling, a new powertrain, and new technology features. Though the Forte’s 4-cylinder engine is new, its size (2.0 liters) and horsepower (147) are unchanged from the previous engine. The previous 6-speed automatic transmission has been replaced by a CVT automatic; the base FE trim is also offered with a 6-speed manual transmission. A 201-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine will be available for the 2020 model year. A 4-door sedan is now the lone body style; the Forte5 4-door hatchback has been dropped. The Forte’s available features include autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, driver attention monitor, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, and wireless cell-phone charging. The new Forte doesn’t outshine its rivals in any key area, but it’s a pleasant car that maintains Kia’s tradition of offering an outstanding value for the dollar.
