Pros: Ferocious acceleration in Supercharged model; impeccably luxurious cabin; fantastic off-road capabilities, good on-road driving dynamics

Cons: Stratospheric prices, especially in Autobiography models; some complex controls; seating for five only—no 3rd-row is available

CG Says: The 2016 Land Rover Range Rover has a new diesel engine option and there are more powerful alternatives of the two existing gasoline engines. Td6 models have a 254-horsepower turbodiesel 3.0-liter V6 with 440 pounds-feet of torque. The supercharged V6 gets a 40-horsepower increase for a total 380 in HSE. The supercharged V8 in the topline SVAutobiography also gets a 40-horsepower boost for 550 horsepower total. New All-Terrain Progress Control acts a low-speed cruise control for rough terrain. The air suspension now automatically lowers when the vehicle is placed in park for easier entry and exit. Other new features include hands-free power tailgate, surround-view camera, and rear-camera washer. The long-wheelbase HSE model is no longer offered. Few SUVs can come close to matching the Range Rover’s combination of good driving dynamics, luxurious accommodations, superb off-road ability, and country-club curb appeal. None of that comes cheap, however, as this is one of the most expensive SUVs around. Most buyers probably don’t need all the Range Rover has to offer, and as such, will likely find better value elsewhere.
