Pros: Plush interior; peppy acceleration; ride and handling balance
Cons: Steep prices when options are added; cramped back seat; mediocre cargo space; intrusive lane-keep-assist and engine-stop/start systems
CG Says: The Evoque is a fashion-forward subcompact crossover from Land Rover’s premium Range Rover brand. This posh SUV is redesigned for 2020; it gains new tech features and an available mild-hybrid powertrain, but loses the unique but seldom-bought convertible model of its first generation. The Evoque’s base engine is a 246-hp turbo 2.0-liter four; the step-up powertrain option is a 296-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that uses a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Both engines are paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive with a Driveline Disconnect feature that disengages the rear wheels for better fuel economy. Available features include ClearSight Ground View, which projects a 180-degree forward view that shows areas normally blocked by the hood and front fenders, and a camera rearview mirror that provides a view unobstructed by rear passengers or cargo. Available safety features include forward collision alert with autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot alert, lane-keep assist, driver-condition monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. Leather upholstery is standard, but eco-friendly fabrics are also available. As with the previous-generation model, the new Evoque is positioned as a stylish, compact urban vehicle, but it also offers Land Rover’s signature off-road capability. Style is given priority over function, so passenger and cargo room aren’t as good as in many class competitors. Many of those rivals also offer better value, but for buyers who like the looks and brand cachet, the Evoque could be pleasant urban runabout.
