Pros: Ferocious acceleration in supercharged V8 models; impeccably luxurious cabin; fantastic off-road capabilities, good on-road driving dynamics
Cons: Stratospheric prices, especially in Autobiography models; some complex controls; seating for five only—no 3rd-row is available
CG Says: The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover adds three new special editions: HSE Westminster Edition, SVAutobiography Dynamic Black Edition, and Autobiography Fifty Edition that is limited to 1970 units globally to mark the 1970 introduction of Range Rover. There is also an improved cabin air filter. Range Rover is a premium large SUV with seating for five. Besides the standard wheelbase, Range Rover also offers long-wheelbase versions with 7.3 inches of additional rear legroom. The base engine is a mild-hybrid, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six cylinder that is available with 355 or 395 horsepower ratings. There is also a plug-in hybrid that combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor for a combined 398 horsepower. The most powerful engine is a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 develops 518 hp in Supercharged and Autobiography models, while the topline SVAutobiography has a 557-hp version of the supercharged V8. A 254-hp 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel is also available. All engines mate to an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive is standard. Available features include massaging seats, heated/cooled seats, power rear seats, hands-free tailgate, adaptive cruise control, surround-view cameras, parking assist, and power door closing, and a Wade Sensing system that provides real-time wading depth information when driving through deep water. Available safety features include lane-keep assist and autonomous emergency braking. Few SUVs can come close to matching the Range Rover’s combination of good driving dynamics, luxurious accommodations, superb off-road ability, and country-club curb appeal. None of that comes cheap, however, as this is one of the most expensive SUVs around. Most buyers probably don’t need all the Range Rover has to offer, and as such, will likely find better value elsewhere.
