2020 Lexus UX 250h F Sport

Pros: High quality interior; impressive fuel economy in hybrid models; good ride and handling balance

Cons: Cramped back seat; polarizing styling; rear visibility

CG Says: The 2020 Lexus UX adds Android Auto capability and rear cross-traffic alert is now paired with the blind-spot alert option. Lexus entered the premium subcompact crossover segment for 2019 with an all-new model. The UX slots below the compact NX in Lexus’s lineup in both size and price; it’s five inches shorter than the NX and significantly less expensive. The UX comes in two versions: The front-wheel-drive-only UX 200 pairs a 169-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with a CVT automatic transmission, while the all-wheel-drive UX 250h hybrid combines a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and CVT with two electric motors driving the rear wheels for a total of 181 hp. (The electric motors only operate at speeds below 44 mph.) Both versions can be fitted with an F Sport package with firmer suspension and unique trim. Standard safety features include forward collision warning and mitigation with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, road-sign assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Available features include 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, heated/ventilated front seats, power tilt/telescopic steering column, and hands-free liftgate. The Lexus UX is a radically styled urban runabout that counts a nicely finished cabin, a broad list of upscale available features, and attractive-for-the-class starting prices among its virtues. Plus, the UX 250h is the only hybrid available in the premium subcompact SUV segment. Downsides include cramped rear-seat space, subpar rear visibility and a finicky touchpad infotainment interface. If you’re looking for a city-friendly crossover with fine road manners and a genuinely luxurious feel, the UX is worth a look.
