Pros: Comprehensive list of available safety features; fuel economy
Cons: Less power than previous generation; top-line models are expensive
CG Says: The 2018 Mazda CX-9 gains more standard features. All models are now equipped with Smart City Brake Support (a low-speed collision mitigation system), blind-spot alert, and rear cross-traffic alert. Also newly standard is Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control, a technology feature that varies engine torque in response to steering inputs to improve steering feel and handling. Mazda’s midsized crossover SUV has three rows of seating for up to seven passengers. A 250-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder paired with a six-speed automatic transmission is the sole powertrain. With its small engine and light weight, CX-9’s fuel economy is among the best in the midsize-SUV class. CX-9 is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Available safety features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist with lane-departure warning, and auto-dimming high-beam headlamps. The CX-9 has a quiet, upscale cabin, along with engaging road manners for a midsize SUV. Although more spacious than the previous-generation, CX-9 is not quite as roomy as some competitors.
