Pros: Excellent build quality; broad range of engine choices; quiet cabin
Cons: Second and 3rd-row seats aren’t as spacious as many premium-large SUVs’; steep price premium of GLS63 AMG model
CG Says: For 2017, Mercedes-Benz changes the name of its largest SUV from GL to GLS to better sync up with the naming structure of its passenger cars. More than the badge is new for the GLS: Styling has been revised inside and out, the latest version of Mercedes’ Comand infotainment system (with Apple CarPlay capability) is available, and all engines gain horsepower (save for the GLS450’s 362-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V6). The GLS550 turbocharged 4.7-liter V8 is now rated at 449 hp (a gain of 20), and the turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 of the high-performance GLS63 jumps from 550 hp to 577. All models get a new 9-speed automatic transmission except for the high-performance GLS63, which retains its 7-speed automatic transmission. The 7-passenger GLS-Class doesn’t have the sheer interior volume of some premium large SUVs, but its accommodations are more than adequate for the majority of buyers. Relatively trim exterior dimensions ease parking and maneuverability, too. Any GLS offers impressive power and high levels of refinement. Note that prices climb quickly as you add options, particularly the Designo interior packages and Bang & Olufsen audio system. The GLS63 AMG model is for high rollers only.
