Pros: Upscale cabin; high-tech available features; choice of powertrains
Cons: Tight third-row seat; expensive options really drive up bottom-line prices
CG Says: Mercedes-Benz’s midsize crossover SUV is redesigned for 2020, gaining new powertrains, new tech features, and an available third-row seat (for 7-passenger seating instead of five). A 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder powers the entry-level GLE 350. The GLE 450 pairs a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder gas engine with a 48-volt “EQ Boost” mild-hybrid system for a total of 362 hp (the EQ Boost system adds 21 hp when needed). The GLE 580 also uses the mild-hybrid system, but pairs it with a 483-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. All engines are paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard on the GLE 450 and GLE 580 and available on the GLE 350 in lieu of rear-wheel drive. Due for the 2021 model year are slope-roofed “Coupe” versions of the GLE, as well as high-performance AMG models: the 429-hp AMG GLE 53 and 603-hp AMG GLE 63 S. New technology features on the 2020 GLE-Class include an E-Active Body Control, an intelligent active suspension system that can control each wheel’s suspension individually; it can lean the vehicle into corners and also wiggle the vehicle to break it loose if it gets stuck in sand or mud. The broad range of available comfort and convenience features includes a cabin air fragrancer, heated/ventilated front seats with massage, heated front armrests, power second-row seats, an automated parking system, and soft-close doors. Available safety features include automatic emergency braking, blind-spot alert, lane-keep assist, evasive-steering assist, exit warning assist, driver-attention monitor, and trailer-stability assist. The new GLE offers a very luxurious cabin, refined powertrains, and fine ride quality, and combines those positive with an almost bewildering array of available high-tech features. However, the available third-row seat is cramped, and all those enticing options really drive up the bottom line. For those shoppers who can foot the bill for a generously equipped example, the redesigned GLE-Class is a technological tour de force.
