CG Says: The 2018 Subaru WRX has subtle front styling changes and retuned suspension. The manual transmission, shifter, and clutch have been revised for smoother gear changes. There is also more sound insulation for a quieter cabin. The STI Type Type RA is a new limited-edition high-performance model with reduced weight, an additional 5 horsepower, and high-performance suspension. The Subaru WRX is a sporty/performance compact sedan with standard all-wheel drive that features active torque vectoring to direct power to the wheel or wheels that need it most in any given situation. The WRX has a 268-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and offers the option of a continuously variable transmission in addition to a 6-speed manual transmission. The sporty WRX STI boasts a 305-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter four (310 in STI Type RA) and comes solely with a 6-speed manual. Available safety features include Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology (pre-collision braking, lane-departure warning, and Reverse Auto Braking), blind-spot alert, and rear cross-traffic alert. The base WRX is an intriguing performance-car value that has few direct competitors, and the updates and improvements of its 2015 redesign make it more compelling. The WRX STI’s higher price, seriously stiff ride, and raucous nature make it best suited for serious performance enthusiasts who are willing to forgo some comfort and practicality for extra speed and agility.
