2021 Audi Q8

Pros: Sporty performance for a large SUV; luxurious interior; long list of standard safety features

Cons: Cargo space and third-row seat sacrificed for style; complex infotainment controls

CG Says: The 2021 Audi Q8 adds standard blind-spot alert and rear cross-traffic to all models, but has few other changes. For 2019, Audi introduced the Q8 crossover SUV that focuses more on style that outright passenger- and cargo capacity. The Audi Q8 is essentially a more dramatically styled, sleeker-roof variant of Audi’s Q7 SUV. The Q8 shares the Q7’s basic platform and 117.9-inch wheelbase, but is 3.3 inches shorter in overall length. While the Q7 has three rows of seats, the Q8 has only two rows of seats and a more rakish rear roofline that reduces cargo room somewhat. The base powertrain is a 335-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The high-performance SQ8 and RS Q8 are powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that develops 500 horsepower in the SQ8 and 591 hp in the RS Q8. All-wheel drive is standard on all models. Also standard is an adaptive suspension—height-adjustable air suspension and all-wheel steering are optional. A new generation MMI control system drops the rotary/push-button control and utilizes two touchscreens with haptic feedback. Available safety features include intersection assist, a feature that monitors cross traffic and can sound a warning and/or apply the brakes to help avoid an accident; turn assist, which can apply the brakes if there is an oncoming vehicle when making a left turn; pre sense city, which can apply the brakes to help avoid a collision if vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists are detected; and vehicle exit assist, which warns if a moving object is approaching from behind when occupants are exiting the car. The Q8 has a comfortable ride and excellent handling for its size. It is significantly more expensive than its Q7 sibling—a vehicle that can carry more passengers and cargo. However, for buyers that don’t need the extra room, the Q8’s flashy looks and luxurious interior may be worth the extra cost.
