2022 BMW i4 M50

Pros: Competitive driving range in eDrive40 model; invigorating acceleration in high-performance M50 model; impressive curved-display-screen dashboard layout; laudable ride/handling balance

Cons: Controversial front-end styling; reduced driving range of M50 model

CG Says: BMW introduces an all-new hatchback sedan with a pure-electric powertrain for 2022. The 2022 BMW i4 is part of a new line of pure EVs coming from BMW; it’s similar in size and shape to the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe (a low-slung 4-door “coupe”). The i4 comes in two models: the eDrive40 has 335 horsepower and rear-wheel drive, and the M50 has front and rear electric motors for all-wheel drive with a combined 536-horsepower. Both versions carry the same battery, which a Level 2 charger can completely charge from zero to 100 percent in under eight hours. A fast charger can give the i4 up to 90 miles of range in 10 minutes.

The i4 eDrive40 has an EPA range of 301 miles with 18-inch wheels and 282 miles with 19-inch wheels. The performance-oriented i4 M50 has a 270-mile range with 19-inch wheels and 227 with 20-inch wheels. BMW says the i4 M50 will go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds.

A slate of standard technology features is highlighted by a large curved display, which merges the gauge cluster with the infotainment screen. The i4 uses the latest BMW infotainment interface with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. BMW’s phone-based app can control charging, and check charging status and available range. Cloud-based navigation updates traffic and locates charging stations and parking spaces. Standard safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, and blind spot alert.

Several performance, technology and appearance packages are available, as well as a list of stand-alone options. BMW is including unlimited 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America locations for two years from purchase. With two distinct versions and a lot of choices for personalization, all wrapped in a relatively traditional compact sport sedan package, the BMW i4 is a unique offering in the premium-brand EV market.
