Pros: Unique upscale character; close-quarters maneuverability; ride quality and noise levels are impressive considering the small size
Cons: Cramped rear-seat space; limited cargo room; so-so acceleration
CG Says: The 2021 Buick Encore gains standard satellite radio and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functionality is now available. Adaptive cruise control is now part of the Safety Package for Preferred models. The topline Sport nand Essence models have been dropped. During the 2020 model year, Encore was joined by an Encore GX that is slightly larger and slots between Encore and Envision in Buick’s lineup. Encore is a subcompact crossover SUV with seating for five. The sole engine is a turbocharged 138-hp 1.4-liter four-cylinder that is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available. Available convenience features include heated steering wheel, keyless access and starting, and rain-sensing wipers. Available safety features include forward-collision warning, blind-spot alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning. Encore delivers surprisingly good ride quality and Buick’s characteristic hushed cabin. For some shoppers, the vehicle’s small size and tall driving position will be real strengths. However, the small dimensions limit Encore’s cargo versatility and rear seat space, especially among similarly priced competitors. Shoppers should also look at Buick’s Encore GX that offers more cargo room and safety features not available on Encore.
