2022 GMC Hummer EV

Pros: Brutal power; serious off-road features; long driving range

Cons: Only the pricey top model is available at introduction; no SUV version yet

CG Says: GMC brings back the famed Hummer brand name for 2022, with a massively powerful large electric pickup truck that aims to blend luxury with extreme off-road capability. Although the Hummer EV will soon be available in an SUV version, for now GMC is offering it only as a four-door, five-passenger crew-cab pickup with a five-foot bed. Likewise for its powertrain; GMC plans to eventually offer a two-engine version, but for now the Hummer EV is available only in its top 1000-horsepower three-engine configuration with all-wheel drive. This powertrain can propel the Hummer EV from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.0 seconds, according to GMC.

Power comes from General Motors’ new Ultium battery technology, which provides an estimated 350-mile driving range. A fast-charging mode gives it 100 miles of range in 10 minutes of charging. The Hummer EV can also charge on public charging terminals or through regular home outlets, but at a slower rate.

In keeping with the Hummer brand’s reputation for serious off-road capability, the Hummer EV is available with specialized equipment such as 4-wheel steering, adaptive air-suspension system, underbody protection plates, a camera-based spotting system, and 35-inch off-road tires on 18-inch wheels. These are all standard on the Edition 1 model — it’s slated to be the top model in the Hummer EV lineup, and it’s the only version GMC will offer initially. Other Hummer EV models aren’t expected until early 2023 or later.

Also included in the Edition 1 are transparent removable roof panels, a power-operated bed cover, and GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system. The Edition 1’s interior sports a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 13.4-inch infotainment display. Standard infotainment features include Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capability, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and GM’s OnStar telematics system.

The new Hummer EV is a unique niche product aimed at a relatively small number of buyers — particularly with the six-figure sticker price of the only model offered for now. But Hummer has never been a brand for everyone. And with the Hummer EV’s burly style, serious off-road features, and mammoth power, it will surely find its share of fans, even amid the spate of electric trucks set to hit the market soon.
