Pros: Outstanding space efficiency provides ample passenger and cargo room; Impressive materials and build quality; absorbent ride, among the sportier feeling midsize crossovers
Cons: So-so fuel economy compared to some rivals; 5-speed automatic transmission feels dated compared to 6- and 8-speed competitors, arguably anonymous styling
CG Says: Honda’s midsize SUV delivers a rewarding combination of performance, utility, and passenger accommodations. Pilot’s exterior styling is boxy and “trucky,” but its overall tractability and sense of refinement belie its old-school SUV looks. Even though its basic design dates back to the 2009 model year, Pilot remains a well-executed crossover and one that’s very much worthy of a top spot on any family’s shopping list. Honda’s traditionally strong resale value should also figure any purchase decision in this segment.
