2018 Hyundai Kona

Pros: Powerful turbocharged engine is available; spacious interior for a subcompact SUV; lengthy list of available features

Cons: Hard plastic prevalent in the interior; some safety features only offered on top trims

CG Says: Hyundai jumps into the subcompact-crossover market for 2018 with an all-new model. The Kona slots below the Hyundai Tucson in both size and price and is one of the smallest vehicles in the class. Two powertrains are offered: SE and SEL models have 147-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, while Limited and Ultimate models get a 175-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder mated to a 7-speed automated-manual transmission. The turbo 1.6 is one of the most powerful engines in the class. All Konas offer a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Available features include forward collision warning and mitigation, lane-keep assist, blind-spot alert, Driver Attention Warning, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, wireless cell-phone charging, and head-up instrument display. The Kona offers a comprehensive list of standard and available features—many that are unusual for the class. Despite the fact that the Kona is one of the smallest subcompact SUVs, it offers generous passenger and cargo room for its size, as well as pleasant driving manners. Although Hyundai is a latecomer to the segment, the Kona is one of the strongest entries and a must see for subcompact-SUV shoppers.
