CG Says: The 2019 Hyundai Kona line gains an electric version for its second season. The new Kona Electric has a 201-horsepower electric motor and an estimated range of 258 miles. Forward collision warning and mitigation, lane-keep assist, and Driver Attention Warning are now standard on all models. The subcompact-crossover Kona slots below the Hyundai Tucson in both size and price and is one of the smallest vehicles in the class. Two gas powertrains are offered: SE and SEL models have 147-hp 2.0-liter 4-cylinder paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, while Limited and Ultimate models get a 175-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder mated to a 7-speed automated-manual transmission. The turbo 1.6 is one of the most powerful engines in the class. All gas-powered Konas offer a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The Electric is front-wheel drive only. Available features include blind-spot alert, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, wireless cell-phone charging, and head-up instrument display. The Kona offers a comprehensive list of standard and available features—many that are unusual for the class. Despite the fact that the Kona is one of the smallest subcompact SUVs, it offers generous passenger and cargo room for its size, as well as pleasant driving manners. Although Hyundai is a latecomer to the segment, the Kona is one of the strongest entries and a must see for subcompact-SUV shoppers.
