Pros: Striking styling; impressive performance from both V6 and V8 models; truly upscale character
Cons: Stingy trunk space; weighs a bit more than some competitors; adding optional equipment pumps up the already steep base prices
CG Says: For 2017, the F-Type lineup expands to include a new entry-level model and a top-line SVR model. The new base model gives up some standard equipment in exchange for lower starting prices, and a new Premium model essentially preserves the standard-equipment level of last year’s base model. Jaguar claims the high-performance SVR has a top speed of 200 mph and is capable of accelerating 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds. Convertibles now have slightly more trunk room. The F-Type is a front-engine, rear- or all-wheel drive coupe and convertible that is smaller and less expensive than the discontinued Jaguar XK. The base V6 F-Types use a supercharged 340-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 powerplant. V6 S models get a 380-horsepower variant of the supercharged 3.0-liter engine. The R model has a 550-hp supercharged 5.0 V8, while the SVR has a 575-hp version of that engine. Both R and SVR have all-wheel drive. Competitive vehicles include the BMW Z4, Chevrolet Corvette, and Porsche Boxster and Cayman. The F-Type is a true sports car that revives the spirit of the classic Jaguar coupes and roadsters of the 1960s. The S is probably the best value, with most of the performance of the R and similar handling. Those shopping for an upscale sports car should add the F-Type to their list.
