Pros: Striking styling; impressive performance from V6 and V8 models; truly upscale character
Cons: Stingy trunk space; weighs a bit more than some competitors; adding optional equipment pumps up the already steep base prices
CG Says: The 2021 Jaguar F-Type gets a midcycle refresh. Styling has been revised with new slim LED headlights and subtly changed sheetmetal outside, along with a high-definition virtual instrument cluster in the cabin. The suspension has been revised, as has the engine lineup. The base engine remains a 296-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. The supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 drops its 340-hp variant and keeps the 380-hp version. The high-performance SVR model has been dropped, but its 575-hp version of the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 is now in R trim. Previously the R was powered by 550-hp supercharged V8. The F-Type is a front-engine, rear- or all-wheel drive 2-passenger coupe and convertible. Jaguar claims the high-performance R has a top speed of 186 mph and is capable of accelerating 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds. All engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Available features include autonomous braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot alert, driver attention monitor, rear-traffic monitor, ceramic brakes, heated/cooled seats, and parallel-parking assist. Competitive vehicles of the F-Type include the Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche 718 Boxster, and Porsche 718 Cayman. The F-Type is a true sports car that revives the spirit of the classic Jaguar coupes and roadsters of the 1960s. The R-Dynamic is probably the best value, with most of the performance of the R and similar handling. The latest refresh builds on the car’s strengths and those shopping for an upscale sports car should add the F-Type to their list.
