2019 Mazda 3

Pros: Nimble handling; available all-wheel drive; long list of available features

Cons: Cramped back seat; some complicated controls; top models get pricey

CG Says: The Mazda 3 is redesigned for 2019, gaining fresh styling, new technology features, and the availability of all-wheel drive—a rare feature in the compact-car class. As before, the 3 comes as a 4-door sedan or 4-door hatchback. New features include a driver-attention monitor, front cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality (on automatic transmission models). The sole engine is a 186-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder carried over from the previous generation; the previous 2.0-liter four is no longer available. The standard transmission is a 6-speed automatic, with a 6-speed manual available on the front-wheel-drive hatchback. Forward collision warning and mitigation, driver-attention monitor, lane-keep assist, blind-spot alert, and adaptive cruise control are standard on all models except the base sedan. Other available features include a head-up instrument display and rain-sensing wipers. The new Mazda 3 aspires to move upmarket and succeeds, while keeping the sporty attitude that has been a Mazda 3 tradition. Prices have crept upward with the ritzier trimmings, tight passenger space is a shortcoming, and rear visibility is iffy in the hatchback. However, the long list of available features, sporty-yet-polished driving demeanor, and available all-wheel drive make Mazda 3 a compelling choice.
