Cons: Steep prices get steeper as options are added; lots of gadgetry makes for some complicated controls[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][vc_column_text]CG Says: The 2021 BMW 7-Series add standard heated front seats/armrest/steering wheel and a driver recorder. The in-dash CD player has been deleted. The 7-Series’s structure features aluminum and carbon fiber for weight savings and improved rigidity. The 740 models have a 335-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine; the 750 has a 523-hp turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. The line-topping M760i is powered by a turbocharged 6.6-liter V12 with 601 hp. The high-performance Alpina B7 has a 600-hp turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. BMW says the Alpina B7 is capable of 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and a 205-mph top speed. There is also a 740e xDrive plug-in hybrid model; it combines a turbocharged 3.0-liter turbo six engine with an electric motor for a combined 389 hp. As expected, a plethora of luxurious features is standard, such as power-closing doors, a hands-free power trunk lid, dual-pane panoramic sunroof, Wi-Fi Internet capability, wireless device charging, and adaptive air suspension. The optional Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview system uses a camera to detect changes in the oncoming road surface and adjusts the suspension accordingly. Remote Controlled Parking allows the driver to move the car in or out of a parking spot while standing outside the vehicle. Extended Traffic Jam Assistant that can steer, brake, and accelerate at speeds up to 40 mph, provided the driver’s attention is on the road. Available luxury features include heated armrests on the doors; an air ionizer that emits one of eight perfume scents; and a Touch Command Tablet for rear-seat passengers that offers driving information, various seat and infotainment controls, and Internet access via the car’s Wi-Fi system. In any of its forms, 7-Series is a technological tour de force that boasts a formidable array of ultra-luxurious features and cutting-edge gadgetry. It’s a compelling competitor in its class—particularly against its primary rival, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][mk_content_box heading=”The Facts”][mk_table el_class=”new-review-specs”]

Cons: Steep prices escalate even further as options are added; rear-seat legroom is not particularly generous[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][vc_column_text]CG Says: The 2021 BMW 5-Series has refreshed styling and an upgraded infotainment system with a larger 12.3-inch screen. The 540i model gains a 48-volt mild hybrid system, but horsepower in unchanged. The 530e plug-in hybrid models see horsepower increase from 248 to 288. The M5 Competition is now an option package instead of a separate model. Standard equipment now includes Android Auto compatibility, satellite radio, and adaptive full-LED Headlights with automatic high beams. The 5-Series is a premium midsize sedan with several powertrain options and a comprehensive list of technology and safety equipment. The 530i is powered by a 248-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and the 540i has a 335-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter 6-cylinder with 48-volt mild hybrid system. The 530e plug-in hybrid combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with an electric motor to produce a total of 288 hp. The sporty M550i xDrive is powered by a 523-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, while the high-performance M5 packs a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 with 600-hp or 617 hp with the Competition Package. All models have an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 530i, 530e, and 540i models offer a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. M550i and M5 have standard all-wheel drive. Available luxury/technology features include ventilated and massaging front seats, rear-seat entertainment system, adaptive cruise control, remote control parking, and BMW’s Gesture Control system (which enables certain infotainment controls to be operated via hand gestures, without touching physical buttons or knobs). Available safety features include automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and mitigation, and steering-linked LED headlights, and BMW’s Fatigue and Focus Alert system. BMW’s 530i and 540i offerings are dynamic premium sport sedans that offer an immersive driving experience with the expected array of coddling luxury and technology features. The M5, M550i, and 530e up the ante for performance and high-tech efficiency, respectively. Any 5-Series offers a compelling blend of nimble performance and high-end ambiance, but you’ll have to pay for it. Cons: Manual transmission only offered on base M4; controversial front-end styling; spendy options drive up bottom-line prices[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][vc_column_text]CG Says: The BMW 4-Series coupe and convertible are redesigned for 2021, gaining 5.2 inches in overall length, along with more power, new technology features, and an in-your-face front-end styling treatment. The related BMW 3-Series sedan was redesigned for 2019, and the 2-doors now join it on the new platform (BMW is also readying a redesigned version of the 4-Series Gran Coupe, a 4-door hatchback sedan which is built on the same 3-Series/4-Series platform). The new 4-Series convertible swaps the security of a power-retractable hardtop for a conventional soft top that is lighter and takes up less trunk space. The base 430i’s turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder carries over, but gains seven horsepower for a total of 255. The M440i’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six gets a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and an increase of 62 horsepower, to 382 hp total. The high-performance M4 retains its turbo 3.0-liter six, but it’s now rated at 473 hp—a 48-hp bump over the previous M4’s base engine. The new M4 Competition model does even better—it’s rated at 503 hp. The base M4 offers a choice of a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission; the 8-speed automatic is the sole transmission for the M4 Competition and all other 4-Series models. Rear-wheel drive is standard on 430i and M4; all-wheel drive is standard for M440i and is available for 430i coupe and M4 Competition (marking the first time an M4 model is available with all-wheel drive). Standard 4-Series safety features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot alert, rear cross-traffic alert, rear-collision preparation, speed-limit information, and automatic high-beam headlights. Also available is adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and Extended Traffic Jam Assistant (which can steer and brake the car on certain highways at speeds up to 37 mph, provided the driver’s attention is on the road). Sporty coupes and convertibles aren’t as popular as they once were, but BMW remains committed to the segment. The nicely executed redesigned 4-Series lineup continues its tradition of fine all-around performance while adding new tech features and better overall refinement—even if the provocative new styling might turn off some shoppers.[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][mk_content_box heading=”The Facts”][mk_table el_class=”new-review-specs”]

2020 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe Review

Infiniti Q60[/vc_column_text][/mk_content_box][mk_content_box heading=”NHTSA Ratings” icon=”moon-signup” el_class=”ratings-box”][mk_skill_meter title=”Overall – NA” percent=”0″][vc_column_text]
Cons: Steep pricing; somewhat stingy on standard features; manual transmission not available for most models; stiff ride[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][vc_column_text]CG Says: The 2021 BMW 3-Series gains new Plug-in Hybrid 330e models. The 330e and all-wheel-drive 330e xDrive can travel 22 miles (2WD) or 20 miles (AWD) on electric power alone.
The high-performance M3 returns and the M3 Competition model is capable of accelerating 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds. The M340 gains a hybrid system, but horsepower remains unchanged at 382. Android Auto functionality has been added and satellite radio is now standard.
BMW’s benchmark 3-Series is a premium midsize sedan that was redesigned for 2019. The base 330i is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that develops 255 horsepower. The M340i has a 382-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The Plug-in Hybrid 330e is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor for a combined 288 horsepower.
For the 330i, M340, and 330e models an 8-speed automatic is the only transmission and rear-wheel drive is standard, with available all-wheel drive. The high-performance M3 has a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six that develops 473 hp in the base M3 or 503 hp in Competition models.
The M3 offers the choice of a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive will be available for the M3 Competition midyear.
Available features for the 3-Series include laser-powered headlights, Parking Assistant, Back-Up Assistant, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot alert, and Extended Traffic Jam Assistant (which can steer and brake the car on certain highways at speeds up to 37 mph, provided the driver’s attention is on the road).
Historically, the BMW 3-Series has dominated the premium compact car segment, thanks to its sport-sedan handling, polished powertrains, and all-around refinement. In recent years, however, improved rivals have challenged the 3-Series and bested it in many ways.
Purist driving enthusiasts will bemoan the redesigned 3-Series’s lack of a manual transmission on most models, but the new car is still a marked improvement over its predecessor; it adds welcome new technology features while maintaining the trademark athletic driving moves and upping the overall refinement level.[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][mk_content_box heading=”The Facts”][mk_table el_class=”new-review-specs”]

Cons: Cramped rear seat with small door openings; some equipment you might expect to be standard on a premium-brand vehicle is an extra-cost option[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][vc_column_text]CG Says: The 2021 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe adds a less expensive front-wheel drive 228i model. Previously, all 2-Series Gran Coupes had been all-wheel drive. Android Auto connectivity is now available. Newly standard are satellite radio, navigation, and an upgraded control system.
BMW introduced this compact sedan last year. The 2-Series Gran Coupe slots below the 3-Series in BMW’s passenger-car lineup in size and price, and like BMW’s other Gran “Coupes,” it’s actually a 4-door sedan with a rakish roofline.
The 2-Series Gran Coupe competes with other “extra-compact” class rivals such as the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz’s A-Class and CLA-Class, and is based on BMW’s X1 and X2 crossover SUV platform.
This chassis is front-wheel-drive based, although all-wheel drive is standard on M235i and available on 228i. The base 228i and 228ixDrive are powered by a 228-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the higher-performance M235i xDrive has a 301-hp version of that engine; both come solely with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Available safety features include automatic emergency braking, blind-spot alert, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.
The BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe breaks away from BMW tradition in that it’s built on front-wheel-drive architecture rather than rear-wheel drive. That might upset some brand purists, but the Gran Coupe has the sporty moves expected of a BMW and its available all-wheel drive will be appreciated in northern climates. However, its price is only slightly less than a rear-drive 3-Series. Be sure to check out both before buying.[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][mk_content_box heading=”The Facts”][mk_table el_class=”new-review-specs”]

Cons: Traditional manual transmission is unavailable; no rear seat in convertible and cramped rear seat in coupe; limited cargo room; stiff ride[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][vc_column_text]CG Says: The 2021 Audi TT adds standard equipment. New standard features include Nappa leather upholstery, smartphone interface, navigation system, blind-spot alert, and Bang and Olufsen sound system. The roadster gains standard neck-level heating. TT comes as a 2+2 hatchback coupe or a 2-seat convertible. The stylish interior is highlighted by a “virtual cockpit” gauge cluster; it packs speedometer, tachometer, infotainment, navigation, vital stats, etc. into one 12.3-inch configurable screen. Standard features include heated mirrors, an adaptive rear spoiler, keyless entry and ignition, and parking sensors. The Audi TT coupe and roadster are powered by a 228-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder; the higher-performance TTS model comes only as a coupe and boasts 292 hp from its turbo 2.0 four. The high-performance TT RS is the most powerful of the TT series with a 394-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine. All models use a 7-speed automated manual transmission; a traditional manual is not offered. The Audi TT continues to offer one-of-a-kind looks while upping the level of technology and refinement. Though base models aren’t quite as quick or agile as a Porsche Cayman or Boxster, they offer true sports-car satisfaction for significantly less money than those rivals.[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][mk_content_box heading=”The Facts”][mk_table el_class=”new-review-specs”]

Cons: Cargo space and third-row seat sacrificed for style; complex infotainment controls[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][vc_column_text]CG Says: The 2021 Audi Q8 adds standard blind-spot alert and rear cross-traffic to all models, but has few other changes. For 2019, Audi introduced the Q8 crossover SUV that focuses more on style that outright passenger- and cargo capacity. The Audi Q8 is essentially a more dramatically styled, sleeker-roof variant of Audi’s Q7 SUV. The Q8 shares the Q7’s basic platform and 117.9-inch wheelbase, but is 3.3 inches shorter in overall length. While the Q7 has three rows of seats, the Q8 has only two rows of seats and a more rakish rear roofline that reduces cargo room somewhat. The base powertrain is a 335-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The high-performance SQ8 and RS Q8 are powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that develops 500 horsepower in the SQ8 and 591 hp in the RS Q8. All-wheel drive is standard on all models. Also standard is an adaptive suspension—height-adjustable air suspension and all-wheel steering are optional. A new generation MMI control system drops the rotary/push-button control and utilizes two touchscreens with haptic feedback. Available safety features include intersection assist, a feature that monitors cross traffic and can sound a warning and/or apply the brakes to help avoid an accident; turn assist, which can apply the brakes if there is an oncoming vehicle when making a left turn; pre sense city, which can apply the brakes to help avoid a collision if vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists are detected; and vehicle exit assist, which warns if a moving object is approaching from behind when occupants are exiting the car. The Q8 has a comfortable ride and excellent handling for its size. It is significantly more expensive than its Q7 sibling—a vehicle that can carry more passengers and cargo. However, for buyers that don’t need the extra room, the Q8’s flashy looks and luxurious interior may be worth the extra cost.[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][mk_content_box heading=”The Facts”][mk_table el_class=”new-review-specs”]

5 Ways Hybrids are Different[/vc_column_text][/mk_content_box][mk_content_box heading=”Also Consider”][vc_column_text]BMW X7

Cons: Overall cargo capacity and third-row seating accommodations don’t measure up to class competitors; firm ride; poor fuel economy of V6[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][vc_column_text]CG Says: After last year’s refresh, the 2021 Audi Q7 has few changes. Blind-spot alert and rear cross-traffic alert are now standard on all models. Redesigned for 2017, Q7 is Audi’s biggest SUV. This premium crossover has three rows of seats and can accommodate up to seven passengers. Three engines are offered: a 248-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder; a 335-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that is paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system; and a 500-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 for the high-performance SQ7. All have an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Standard features include panoramic sunroof, power liftgate, and xenon headlights. Available safety and technology options include a traffic-jam-assist feature that allows for semi-autonomous driving at speeds up to 37 mph; infrared night-vision assistant; a collision-mitigation system with automatic braking; Audi’s “virtual cockpit” that fills the 12.3-inch instrument-display area with a panoramic 3D-like map while the depictions of the gauges migrate to the corners; top-view camera; and pedestrian detection. The Q7 is a solid contender that delivers surprising athleticism for its class, along with a quiet, sophisticated cabin and all of the expected technology and safety features. Its cargo capacity comes up short compared to its rivals, and its ride might be too firm for some drivers, but the Q7 is a well-executed luxury SUV that is more tractable than its size would suggest.[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][mk_content_box heading=”The Facts”][mk_table el_class=”new-review-specs”]

Cons: Freestanding control screen looks tacked on; prices rise quickly as options are added[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][vc_column_text]CG Says: The 2021 Audi Q5 has revised styling and a new infotainment system. The base engine gets a mild-hybrid system and horsepower increases from 248 to 262. The SQ5 also refreshed styling. A Q5 Sportback with a more rakish rear roofline is expected midyear. The Audi Q5 premium compact crossover SUV was redesigned for 2018. The base engine is a 262-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder paired with a 7-speed automated-manual transmission. A PHEV plug-in hybrid model combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter gas engine with an electric motor for a total of 362 horsepower. The sporty SQ5 variant has a 349-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 paired with an 8-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is standard on all, and the system can conserve fuel by disconnecting the rear axle when extra traction is not needed. Automatic emergency braking is standard, and an available vehicle-exit-assist system warns if a car or bicycle is approaching as a door is opened. Other available features include LED headlights; panoramic sunroof; adaptive cruise control; lane-keep assist; rear cross-traffic alert; blind-spot alert; and a traffic-jam assist feature that combines acceleration, braking, and steering guidance at speeds below 40 mph. The Q5 is a comfortable, quiet premium-compact crossover with an impeccably finished cabin and polished, athletic road manners. The SQ5 adds a healthy extra dose of all-around performance, albeit for a significant price premium.[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][mk_content_box heading=”The Facts”][mk_table el_class=”new-review-specs”]

Cons: Complicated infotainment controls; no economical front-drive model offered[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][vc_column_text]CG Says: The 2021 Audi Q3 drops its topline Prestige model, but option packages can make up for the loss. The base Premium model gains standard lane-departure warning, power seats, and steering-wheel shift paddles. The previous optional S line exterior trim is now standard. The Q3 is a premium subcompact crossover SUV that was redesigned for 2019. The sole power train is a 228-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to an 8-speed auto with standard all-wheel drive. Available features include collision warning and mitigation, blind-spot alert, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, topview camera, and park assist. The current-generation Q3 offers more room, power, and equipment than the previous Q3, making it a strong contender in the competitive premium subcompact crossover segment.[/vc_column_text][mk_divider style=”padding_space” margin_top=”10″ margin_bottom=”10″][mk_content_box heading=”The Facts”][mk_table el_class=”new-review-specs”]
