Pros: Supercar-level acceleration and handling; smooth ride for a high-performance car; build quality
Cons: Driving range estimates lag some other electric vehicles; cramped rear seat; exotic-car pricing; some complicated controls; Android Auto functionality not available
CG Says: Porsche introduces its first pure-electric vehicle, the Taycan, as a 2020 model. The 2020 Porsche Taycan is a low-slung, midsize 4-door sport sedan that focuses on a high-performance driving experience in addition to efficiency. Indeed, it is one the fastest electric vehicles available; Porsche claims 0-60-mph runs of 2.6 seconds and a top speed of 161 mph for the Taycan Turbo S. While most EVs use a 400-volt electrical system, the Taycan is the first production vehicle with an 800-volt system that allows for faster charging times. Porsche says the charging time from five to 80 percent is 22.5 minutes, under ideal conditions. However, this is with an 800-volt DC fast charger, which is currently rare. All Taycans are all-wheel drive, with one electric motor driving the front wheels and another for the rear. Almost all electric vehicles use single-speed transmissions, but the Taycan’s rear motor is connected to a 2-speed transmission to aid acceleration. Total horsepower varies from 522 to 750, and the estimated driving range is from 192 to 203 miles. Seating for four is standard, although an optional 3-passenger rear seat increases the number to five. Available safety features include autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot alert, night vision assist, surround-view camera, and adaptive cruise control. The Taycan is the zero-emissions vehicle that has the handling and performance expected of a Porsche. Taycan shoppers will likely accept the low-slung stance and tight back seat as acceptable compromises for the thrilling performance, but the pricing is steep even by luxury electric-vehicle standards. Still for well-heeled buyers who want to go green without sacrificing driving pleasure, the Taycan might be the ticket.
