2014 Volkswagen Passat SEL

Pros: Good fuel economy; vast-for-the-class cabin with excellent rear-seat space; refined interior materials; availability of smooth, economical diesel engine; composed ride

Cons: V6 models significantly pricier than 4-cylinder versions; some less-than-intuitive controls; lack of stand-alone options

CG Says: The 2014 Volkswagen Passat gets a new available engine: a turbocharged 1.8-liter 4-cylinder with 170 horsepower replaces the previous 2.5-liter 5-cylinder. Also new for 2014 are a Sport trim level, a rearview camera on higher trim levels, and the availability of Volkswagen’s Car-Net communications system/smartphone app. The Volkswagen Passat offers excellent passenger and cargo room in a very practical and comfortable package. While the gasoline engines are very refined, and fine choices in their own right, the available TDI engine is one of this sedan’s defining features. For drivers willing to consider a diesel engine, the TDI model delivers excellent fuel economy and overall performance. In a class filled with excellent choices, the Passat follows a bit of a different path–one that helps it stand out from the crowd.
