2022 Volkswagen Taos

Pros: Generous interior space for the size; decently peppy acceleration; good close-quarters maneuverability

Cons: A lot of the safety tech isn’t standard on base trims; some so-so interior materials; AWD version has less cargo volume

CG Says: Volkswagen enters the subcompact SUV segment for 2022 with the introduction of the all-new Taos. Slotting in under the Tiguan as the smallest, most affordable SUV in VW’s lineup, the Taos is powered by a 158-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available in all trims. FWD models use an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the AWD versions get a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Standard features include push-button start, automatic headlights, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and VW’s Digital Cockpit virtual instrument panel (SEL models get a larger, configurable Digital Cockpit display). Available features include wireless charging, BeatsAudio premium sound system, keyless entry, and heated front seats and side mirrors. Available safety features include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam headlights. With more Americans choosing SUVs over traditional passenger cars, automakers are responding in kind with their respective product lineups. The new-for-2022 Taos essentially replaces the long-running Golf compact hatchback in VW’s model roster (a new-generation Golf is being sold in other countries, but only the high-performance GTI and Golf R models are slated to come to the US). The Taos is a compelling crossover SUV that straddles the line in size and price between the subcompact and compact SUV classes. That “just right” positioning, along with its generous interior space and comfortable driving dynamics, should make the Taos a popular new entry.
