CG Says: Volvo adds a new pure-electric crossover to its model lineup for 2022. The 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge is essentially a sleeker, fastback-roof version of the Volvo XC40 Recharge subcompact crossover EV. Unlike the XC40, the C40 comes only as a pure EV—there’s no gasoline-engine version—and it’s only available via ordering online. The C40’s dual-electric-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain is shared with the XC40 Recharge; it has 402 horsepower and an EPA-rated driving range of 226 miles. The C40 Recharge comes in only one high-end trim level – Ultimate – and has a generous list of standard features, including an 8-way power driver seat with memory, blind-spot alert with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert, power-retractable and auto-dimming mirrors, remote starting, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Standard safety gear includes forward collision warning and mitigation, lane-departure warning and mitigation, lane-keep assist with oncoming traffic avoidance, 360-degree camera display, and rear obstacle detection. Standard convenience features include a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, power-folding rear headrests, power liftgate, adaptive headlights, and wireless device charging. Most of the C40 Recharge’s virtues are available at a lower cost in the XC40 Recharge, and the C40’s sleek, low roofline brings compromises in rearward visibility and maximum cargo capacity. Still, it might be worth its premium for EV shoppers who value style and exclusivity over optimal practicality.
