2018 BMW M6

Pros: High-end interior trimmings; invigorating performance, especially with 650 model and M6; broad range of optional equipment and appearance features

Cons: Cramped rear-seat room; high-performance models ride somewhat stiffly; low seating position compromises visibility somewhat

CG Says: The 2018 BMW 6-Series drops its coupe, leaving only the convertible to be covered in this review. There is also a 6-Series Gran Coupe which is 4-door sedan with a coupe-like roofline (see separate review) and the new 6-Series Gran Turismo that is a 4-door hatchback (see separate review). The BMW 6-Series is a premium grand-touring convertible that delivers regal cabin trimmings, high-tech features, and invigorating performance—all at very high levels (with prices to match). The high-performance M6 model takes the all-around athleticism even higher, but its sheer size and heft means it’s not as agile as some of its smaller, lighter competitors. The base 640 is powered by a 315-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder and the 650i has a 445-hp turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. Both engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive is available. The M6 packs a 552-hp turbo 4.4-liter V8 and is mated to a 7-speed automated-manual transmission. Base prices are steep and the options list contains many expensive extras that can push the bottom line higher still. Regardless, for those who can afford one, 6 Series will almost certainly delight.
