Pros: Responsive 4-cylinder engine; posh interior; generous passenger and cargo room for the size
Cons: Real-world fuel economy falls short of EPA numbers; many desirable features restricted to upper trim levels and require expensive option packages
CG Says: Infiniti’s compact crossover SUV is redesigned for 2019 after taking the 2018 model year off. The all-new 2019 QX50 is about two inches shorter in length than the previous generation, and about three inches taller and four inches wider—the new dimensions make for notably improved passenger room and cargo capacity. The sole powertrain is a turbocharged 2.0-liter “VC-Turbo” 4-cylinder paired with a CVT automatic transmission. The engine makes 268 horsepower and utilizes innovative variable-compression-ratio technology. The model lineup ascends through Pure, Luxe, and Essential trim levels, all of which are available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Available safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, backup collision intervention, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitor, and lane departure warning and intervention. Also available is Distance Control Assist, a feature that monitors what’s in front of you and pushes back on the throttle pedal if the vehicle ahead is closer than the pre-set distance (which is set by the driver). Other available features include Infiniti’s ProPILOT Assist driving-aid system, adjustable Direct Adaptive Steering, and a head-up display. The all-new QX50 offers sleek styling, a nicely finished cabin, decent room for both people and cargo, and a long list of high-tech available features. The ambitious new 4-cylinder powertrain supplies ample power, but our real-world fuel-economy numbers didn’t quite live up to the EPA estimates. Also, getting many of those desirable new features means stepping up to top-line trim and pricey option packages. Still, the new QX50 is an elegant package that offers a compelling mix of sport and utility.
