Pros: Availability of Hybrid version; respectable fuel-economy; broad range of standard and available equipment; availability of 3rd-row seat; generously sized, versatile rear cargo area
Cons: Mediocre acceleration; transmission isn’t as responsive as some class competitors; engine is noisy during acceleration; the 3rd-row seat is sized mainly for children
CG Says: The Nissan Rogue gets a refresh for 2017 that includes updated styling, several new features, and a gas/electric hybrid variant. The Hybrid combines an electric motor with a 2.0-liter engine to produce a total of 176 horsepower; the 170-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder continues unchanged in non-hybrid models. Forward-collision warning and mitigation was previously available, but the ’17’s system adds pedestrian detection. Also new are rear cross-traffic alert and lane-departure warning and mitigation, adaptive cruise control and automatic high-beam headlights. A heated steering wheel and hands-free power liftgate are new convenience features. The Nissan Rogue’s numerous enhancements for 2017 make it an even more compelling choice in its highly competitive segment. The Rogue and the Mitsubishi Outlander are the only vehicles in the compact SUV class to offer a 3rd-row seat, but that seat is too small for most adults to sit in comfort. Rogue’s acceleration is also a bit sluggish, but its classy interior trimmings and outstanding cargo versatility rank among the best in its class. The new Rogue Hybrid should prove a fine alternative to the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Kia Niro.
