Pros: Outstanding fuel economy; front-seat legroom; cargo space
Cons: Visibility to rear corners; rear-seat legroom
CG Says: After its redesign last year, the 2017 Toyota Prius gains a standard Toyota Safety Sense package. Safety Sense includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection; automatic high-beam headlights; lane-departure alert with steering assist; and adaptive cruise control. Also, the plug-in Prius Prime rejoins the lineup after an absence of one year. Toyota claims the new Prime has an all-electric range of 25 miles. Prius, Toyota’s hybrid compact hatchback sedan, moved into its fourth generation with updated styling to its familiar shape, a redone interior, a lower and wider stance, and higher fuel-economy ratings. A 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor produce a combined 121 horsepower. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is the only transmission. LED headlights and keyless entry and starting are standard. Parking assist, Siri Eyes Free, and head-up instrument display are available. Legroom is generous up front, but only adequate in the rear. The new Prius is simply a fine car—a fine car capable of breaking 50 mpg.
